Upside of Afghan mess for Israel: Closer ties with Arab states.
IN LIGHT of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the Taliban’s lightning takeover of the country, the idea about not being able to rely on anyone but oneself – not even the US – is obviously being internalized these days not only in Jerusalem but in other capitals around the region and the world.
If former president Barack Obama brought Israel and the Persian Gulf countries closer because of his pivot away from traditional US regional allies like Egypt and Saudi Arabia and because he was determined to sign a nuclear deal with Iran, the recent events in Afghanistan will strengthen those ties even more.
Even if Saudi Arabia will not formally normalize relations with Israel, the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and the quick Taliban takeover will push it toward even closer security cooperation with the Jewish state.

If the US is seen regionally as a power that will not be there in the end, then countries long reliant on a US umbrella will get the message and look to strengthen ties with Israel – not out of any expectation that Israel will send troops to save their regime, but, rather, in the hope that close security cooperation could better help them defend themselves.

The United Arab Emirates said on Wednesday that it is hosting former Afghan president Ashraf Ghani “on humanitarian grounds,” after he fled his country amid a Taliban takeover.

Ghani’s whereabouts had been unknown after he fled Afghanistan at the weekend in the face of a sweeping advance by the Taliban.
“The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation can confirm that the UAE has welcomed President Ashraf Ghani and his family into the country on humanitarian grounds,” the ministry said in a brief statement.
Ghani left Afghanistan on Sunday as the Taliban closed in on Kabul, before the insurgents walked into the Afghan capital unopposed.
In a Facebook post, Ghani said the “Taliban have won” and that he fled to avoid a “flood of bloodshed.”
This is not the first time that the United Arab Emirates — an oil-rich Gulf country — has opened its arms to former leaders and their relatives, now persona non grata in their own country.
The UAE is one of three nations, including Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, which recognized the previous hardline Taliban regime, which ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.
In his last years in office, Ghani watched as he was first cut off from talks between Washington and the Taliban that paved the way for the US exit from Afghanistan, and then forced by his American allies to release 5,000 hardened insurgents to lock down a peace deal that never materialized.
Dismissed as a “puppet” by the Taliban, Ghani was left with little leverage during his final months in the presidential palace, and resorted to delivering televised diatribes that did little to improve his reputation with Afghans.

The pontiff and six other church officials from North, Central and South America called getting inoculated a moral obligation.
The Vatican in December declared that taking the vaccine was “morally acceptable.” Both Francis, and his predecessor, Pope Benedict, have been vaccinated against Covid-19.
